How to design a visually-appealing website when you’re not a designer

How to design a visually-appealing website when you’re not a designer

Dec 1, 2016 | Visual Marketing

I’m a firm believer that every business needs a website. Although some may argue whether that’s true, I can’t tell you how often I’ve walked away from a business who either didn’t have a website or had a poorly designed one. When I DIY’ed my first...

Hey, there. I’m Krista

I'm calling spaciousness into my life right now. I'm calling spaciousness into my life right now.

As I reflect on my life, it's evident how much of the overwhelm and burn out I've been experiencing can be eliminated by drawing in spaciousness.

When we create space in our lives, meaning:

☕️ breaks between activities
💤 intentional rest
⬨ practicing the art of doing nothing
🌿 doing only what's essential
😌 simplifying your surroundings and the way you work

You create space for the things that matter.

For creativity to flow.

You can focus on your priorities because it becomes clear what's important.

This shouldn't be a once-per-year event, but rather an ongoing, consistent business habit.

I'm currently planning with the seasons with the help of @thequietmarketer and I'm already feeling much clarity and focus.

Are you someone who makes spaciousness a part of your business plan?

It might just be the key to your success ❥

Feeling burnt out? Afraid to take a break from you Feeling burnt out? Afraid to take a break from your work?

Recently, I decided to take a few days away from social media after months of nearly daily posting. I was feeling proud for sticking with the goal I had set at the beginning of the year. 🎯

Although I was started to see the signs of burnout (feeling resentful, overwhelmed, confused about my direction and a complete loss of motivation), I powered through. 💪🏼

This is a common theme for me and my business. It seems to be the way I work. 🙅🏻‍♀️

I'll get immense creative surges and hyper-focus for months at a time but inevitably I burn out and I need to take weeks even months to recover.

Here's the pattern I've noticed:

😀 I'm in the creative zone for 2-3 months at a time.

😟 I burn out.

😩 I grudgingly take a 3-4 week hiatus.

🤬 I feel like 💩 for the unexpected break and I can't find the momentum to get back at it.

Past patterns have shown me that it takes me a long time to regain flow and find the momentum to get back to the goals and intentions I've set.

But it doesn't have to be that way.

The beauty is that when you recognize unwanted patterns, you can change them. 😁

When I worked corporate, I scheduled time off at least once per quarter. Why should my business be any different?

So this is what I'm doing.

I'm scheduling short breaks each season to make space for new intentions and creativity to flow.

To have space for me.

To fill my boots with whatever feels aligned at the moment.

I'd love to know if you schedule breaks in your business or if you wait for the signs of burnout to kick in?

If so, how do you find the motivation to get back?

Love K.

As ethical business owners, I believe that we bear As ethical business owners, I believe that we bear a responsibility to use conscious language that doesn't force people into making decisions they're not ready to make.

Instead, lead with empathy, compassion and sensitivity for the *real* people who are reading what you write.

Do this, and you'll be well on the path toward making authentic connections with the people who'd genuinely benefit from your work.

In mainstream marketing, we're taught that if you In mainstream marketing, we're taught that if you sell to your potential client's "lizard brain"🦎, then you're more likely to convert them into buyers.

For many heart-centred entrepreneurs, this assumption doesn't sit right.

I was asked recently if I could speak about using lizard brain language in your copy and here are a few quick thoughts.

Lizard brain copy is a carefully-crafted language that's written to persuade someone to take action.

Using tactics like hype, FOMO, urgency, scarcity and fear to get people to:

✔️ Book a Discovery call with you
✔️ Buy your products
✔️ Sign up for your coaching program
✔️ Enrol in your course, etc.

It's often written with an aggressive edge that guilts, rushes or fears people into thinking that if I don't work with you now, I'm going to miss out on some critical information that'll make me a failure in my life, business or relationships if I miss out.🙅🏻‍♀️

The problem is, your prospective clients will feel sold to.

They'll feel coerced into taking an action they weren't ready to take, which is damaging in the long run for your relationships with good people.

When you write highly persuasive copy intending to convert as many browsers into buyers as you can handle (aka taking anyone's money regardless of fit or feasibility) - you'll attract the wrong people.

How can you avoid using it in your copy? (scroll through each image for my expanded views):

1. Be clear about your intentions. 🔮

2. Accept that you'll make fewer sales. 💶

3. Think about the person on the other end. 👩🏻‍💻

I'd love to know how you can make a shift toward greater authenticity in your copy?

How To Avoid Lizard Brain Language in Your Copy. O How To Avoid Lizard Brain Language in Your Copy. Omgosh, I did it! My first live 😂👏🏻

Using language that plays on people’s fear, guilt, shame or primal need to avoid pain pushes people into taking action they don’t need or want, so what do you do instead?

01. Be clear about your intentions to not use hype, fear, FOMO, urgency or persuasion to sell your offers online.

It’s that simple.

Just know that if you do, your prospective clients will feel sold to. They’ll feel coerced or pushed into taking an action they weren’t ready to take which is damaging in the long run for your relationships with good people.

02. Accept that when you don’t use Lizard Brain language in your copy you’ll make fewer sales.

The reality is, Reptilian Brain language works. You’ll get more sign-ups, clients, course enrolments if you write copy that fears people into working with you.

If you make people feel like a failure if they don’t work with you or they’ll miss out on this one-time offer (we’ve all seen those) because the deal is ending now, you’ll get a bunch of scared, manipulated people signing up to work with you or buy your products.

These are not the people who rave about you to your friends or eagerly share your content on social media.

They feel worse because they bought something they didn’t need or want.

When I know what you really want are conscious people making informed decisions from a heart-centred place.

03. Remember there’s a real person on the other end.

As online biz owners we can forget we’re talking to real humans and therefore it can make it easy for some people to play to their insecurities.

Be sensitive to the people you’re talking to. Ask yourself, is this how I’d speak to someone if they were sitting here in front of me?

With conventional copywriting, most likely not.

Lead with empathy and compassion and you’ll always be led toward the path of resonating and connecting with people who’d truly benefit from your work ❤️🌈

Was this helpful? If so, what specifically?
